All mobile tour participants will be charged a fee ranging from $10 - $25 per tour to help cover associated costs.

The Knoxville South Waterfront Vision Plan, adopted in 2006, describes a long-term improvement strategy for an approximate 750-acre area fronting the 3-mile shoreline of the Tennessee River, directly south of downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

This tour route will provide a unique perspective redevelopment from the projects along the corridor.

PLEASE NOTE:  We will be departing from the front door of the Conference Hotel at exactly 3:15 to catch the Orange Line Trolley at Clinch Avenue and Walnut (estimated stop is at 3:21 PM, next the YWCA) for the trip to University Commons. Late arrivals will miss our departure.

The Cumberland Avenue Corridor Project will take a semi-suburban, auto-oriented corridor that is frequently used as pass through on the way to somewhere else and make it into an urban, multi-modal corridor providing safe and attractive transportation for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit and cars, while creating a unique urban district with a variety of opportunities for people to stay and discover a great place.

Mobile Tour 3: Baker Creek Preserve

Baker Creek Preserve

The Baker Creek Preserve is a 100-acre property that is part of Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. The preserve features hilltop views, wooded valleys, giant sycamore trees, and a beautiful creek. Also located in the Baker Creek Preserve is the newly completed double black diamond “Devil’s Racetrack” mountain bike trail.

This will be a round-trip 3-mile hike that is for those who are regular walkers/hikers. Items to bring are water, hiking stick, rain jacket for light, unexpected rain, good hiking shoes/boots, and a snack if needed. Transportation will be provided from the conference hotel to the trailhead and back to the hotel. The hike should take approximately 1.5 hours.

Community Schools: Great Partners for Placemaking and Neighborhood Redevelopment (South Knoxville Elementary)

Want to learn more about Community Schools and see their role in placemaking and neighborhood redevelopment? Our tour of South Knoxville Elementary, just 10 minutes away by van, will open your eyes to lots of potential!  Staffed and open into the evening, Community Schools in Knoxville embrace the academic needs of kids while using school space to build quality of life and inspire an investment in neighborhood revitalization.  Join the school principal, planners, and staffers with the Great Schools Partnership in small group breakout tours that show you how Community Schools work, and how government and nonprofits are integrating into schools.  A visual gallery of all twelve schools will highight similarities and differences.  After the tour, you'll be treated to an afternoon ice cream and snack social, prepared by the students using ingredients from the school garden.  Co-sponsored by the Great Schools Partnership, Knox County Schools, League of Women Voters of Knoxville-Knox County, and UT Transportation Research Center.

THIS IS A FREE WORKSHOP, thanks to van transportation provided by the University of Tennessee Transportation Research Center,​ but you must RSVP to attend​. Space is limited to 30 and biking is encouraged.  

​The t​our will gather in the lobby at ​2 pm and depart in vans parked in front of the Crowne Plaza at ​2:15 pm. For bike travel, the distance is 1.5 miles with estimated travel time of 11-15 minutes.  South Knoxville Elementary's address is: 801 Sevier Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37920 and the map is found HERE.  After the tour, vans will depart the school at ​4 pm and return to the hotel at approximately ​4:15 pm.

Federal Research Institutions

Note: Federal requirements for admission to the National Transportation Research Center and Oak Ridge National Lab require additional information to be submitted at least 15-days in advance of the scheduled visit. See details at the bottom of this page.

Mobile Tour 4:  National Transportation Research Center (NTRC)

NTRC offers industry, academia, and other agencies the opportunity to access state-of-the-art technologies, equipment and instrumentation, and computational resources to advance transportation technologies. These resources are critical to their efforts in the areas of improving fuel economy, reducing emissions and addressing transportation systems issues, such as traffic congestion, evacuation planning and highway safety.

Tour participants will visit the facility, including a stop in the state of the art Transportation Analysis and Visualization Lab.

Mobile Tour 5:  Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL)

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

ID Requirements for visiting federal research facilities

Mobile tour participants to ORNL and NTRC are required to submit their name, nationality and company affiliation at least 15 days in advance of the tour.  Participants who are not US citizens will be required to submit additional information. Once on-site, one of the following forms of identification (listed below) will be required. Visitors from holding a driver’s license from certain states listed below will need an alternate ID in order to comply with the REAL ID Act.

Anyone who does not have compliant identification will not be allowed access to these facilities.
