Course Description:
Stabilization is the first and foremost order of business when dealing with the treatment of trauma. This workshop will draw on the wisdom and tools of the masters in the field while providing a coherent roadmap and “rules of the road”. Dr. Gold-Steinberg will guide clinicians through the too often unwieldy terrain of helping traumatized clients develop realistic treatment goals, learn skills for safety and regulation, and integrate competing or conflicting parts of self.
Learning Objectives - at the end of this conference, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate the clinical presentation of post-traumatic stress disorder and attachment wounding.
2. Apply criteria for working within each of the 3 phases of a trauma treatment plan.
3. Describe 2 strategies each for regulating client states of hyperarousal, hypoarousal, and flashback.
4. Explain how to use mindfulness to support the leadership of a client’s Wise Self.
5. Describe how to use a strength-based approach in responding to self-harming or maladaptive behaviors of clients.
6. List three strategies that clinicians can employ to cultivate a therapeutic alliance that is compassionate, boundaried, and emphasizes the therapist’s role as guide rather than rescuer.
