Course Description:
This seminar will provide a comprehensive approach to the evaluation of opioid and other substance use disorders (SUD). Beginning with client screening, Dr. Albanese will delineate the multiple levels of assessment as well as provide an overview of treatment elements, including an integrated approach. Special emphasis will be given to medication treatment. Other areas of special focus will include assessment and the treatment of people with co-occurring disorders, especially those who have experienced trauma.
Learning Objectives - at the end of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive SUD assessment;
- Evaluate indications for and use of common SUD medications;
- Explain and address the challenges posed by the current opioid crisis;
- Articulate factors that will help distinguish substance-induced psychiatric symptoms from symptoms related to a co-occurring psychiatric disorder;
- Develop a comprehensive treatment approach to people with co-occurring disorders.
Mark Albanese, MD, was educated at Harvard College, Cornell University Medical College, and Massachusetts Mental Health Center/Harvard Medical School where he completed his psychiatry residency training. Board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, Dr. Albanese is Director of Adult Outpatient Psychiatry and Addiction Services at Cambridge Health Alliance, and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
