Course Description: 

This workshop will provide an introduction to the field of culinary medicine and nutritional therapies for mental health, exploring its scope of practice, assessment, scientific evidence, clinical principles, and indigenous knowledge systems for the use of foods, herbs, spices, dietary and supplement protocols for the prevention and treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia and cognitive performance. Dr. Korn will cover the integration of this work into counseling and psychotherapy, deconstruct dietary myths, and outline next steps for further training. 

Learning Objectives - at the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Utilize the Korn Nutritional Food/Mood Assessment
  2. List six specific dietary interventions for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia 
  3. Identify  four nutritional supplements that can improve mood and behavior
  4. Outline two methods for improving function of the microbiome or Second Brain
  5. Describe two ways in which culture and genetics influence culinary medicine and mental health
  6. List three “Good food/bad food” myth

Leslie Korn, PhD, MPH, LMHC, author of Rhythms of Recovery: Trauma, Nature and the Body, and Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health, specializes in the use of nutritional, herbal and culinary medicine for the treatment of trauma and chronic physical and emotional illness. She provides clients effective alternatives to psychotropic medication, coaches mental health clinicians moving into nutrition and integrative medicine. She completed her graduate education in the departments of psychiatry and public health at Harvard Medical School.
