Course Description:

This workshop will review the basic components of clinical interviewing and how these skills may be applied to and practiced within the context of suicide risk. Based on the American Association of Suicidology’s Core Competencies, clinicians will learn to perform a robust suicide assessment, increase their clinical competence in the use of language related to suicide and other high risk behaviors, and build on already existing interviewing skills. In addition, supervising clinicians will be provided with competency-based tools for evaluating the skills of direct care clinicians.

Learning Objectives - at the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the core competencies for the assessment and management of individuals at risk for suicide
  2. Apply specific clinical interviewing techniques to elicit suicidal ideation from patients
  3. Experience greater confidence and competence in the use of language related to suicide and other high risk behaviors.

Kirk Woodring, LICSW, CGP, has practiced in inpatient, partial hospitalization, outpatient, and hospital emergency departments.
