Course Description:

When it comes to treating anxiety, growing evidence shows that the quickest, most effective approach involves ramping up fears while welcoming the experience. Attendees will learn how to rapidly engage anxious clients in the therapeutic alliance and then help them shift their relationship with their fears and override the responses that perpetuate them. The goal is to persuade clients to adopt a self-help protocol to voluntarily, purposely, and aggressively seek out uncertainty moment-by-moment.

Learning Objectives - at the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

1.         Instruct a client in logically dismantling the common dysfunctional frames of reference of an anxiety disorder or OCD.
2.         Apply the logic of physics to paradoxical treatment.
3.         Reframe a new, internally-consistent paradoxical frame of reference for treatment.
4.         Describe strategies to shift clients’ orientation from defense to offense.
5.         Demonstrate how to activate the therapeutic strategy moment-by-moment within threatening situations.
6.         Modify the habituation model to accelerate progress.
7.         Teach clients specific procedures to control anxiety-provoking worries.
8.         Clarify how to adapt self-talk in order to influence the working memory.
9.         Demonstrate how to incorporate interceptive exposure within the treatment session for panic disorder.
10.       Identify the flawed goals of those with social anxiety and the underlying beliefs that drive them.
11.        Integrate both motivational and instructional self-talk cues to enhance exposure.
12.       Identify the benefits of an intervention which is arousal congruent.
13.       Defend the stance of wanting-what-you-don’t-want within paradoxical treatment.
14.       Explain how to activate “approach” emotions toward anxious uncertainty during exposure.
