Course Description:

Mental health providers may unwittingly create unintended disparities due to the hierarchical nature and power differentials of the provider-patient relationship. In this workshop, Dr. Alegria will place special emphasis on the major obstacles that confront ethnic/racial minority patients in mental healthcare systems and what changes might be made to offer optimal care. She will identify strategies to improve communication and strengthen therapeutic alliances with multi-cultural patients to promote behavioral health equity.

Learning Objectives - at the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

1. Identify two challenges linked to implementing shared decision-making in the clinical encounter.
2. Describe one central aspect that needs to be included to improve communication with minority clients
3. Describe one central aspect that needs to be included to improve therapeutic alliance with minority clients.
4. Describe how attribution error in the clinical setting can be a barrier to treatment and affect the quality of care.
5. Identify two techniques that can be applied to patient-provider interactions to become a more responsive provider.

Margarita Alegría, PhD, is the chief of the Disparities Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
