Opioid Overdose Prevention, Naloxone Education, and Coordinated Response Efforts

ABOUT THIS SESSION
The District of Columbia is at the center of an opioid epidemic with fatal drug overdoses increasing by over 200% from 2014 to 2017. To address these often fatal consequences of the opioid crisis, the District has implemented a multi-disciplinary response, identifying best practices and strategies for communities in addressing this epidemic. The presenter will provide a broad epidemiological profile of fatal and non-fatal opioid overdoses, a summary of the pharmacology of opioids, and appropriate responses to emergency overdoses.
Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
- Identify opioid substances, their impact on the body, and signs/symptoms of use
- Describe the scope of the opioid epidemic in the District of Columbia
- List strategies and other evidence-based practices to prevent opioid-related fatalities, including those implemented throughout the District
SESSION PRESENTER
Jonjelyn Gamble, MPH, MSW, CHES, is a Public Health Analyst at The District of Columbia’s Department of Health, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD and TB Administration (HAHSTA). She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana and Master’s degrees in Social Work and Public Health from Tulane University. Her training and work experience includes HIV and Opioid prevention program development and implementation, program monitoring and evaluation, case management, HIV behavioral surveillance, and policy development. In addition to managing the activities of HIV testing expansion with DC Health, she coordinates HAHSTA’s Narcan Distribution Program and Opioid Overdose Prevention Training throughout the District. She is also a vital member of the District of Columbia’s Opioid Working Group and Opioid Strategy Group, working on the District of Columbia Strategic Plan to Reduce Opioid Use, Misuse, and Related Deaths. Ms. Gamble has co-authored articles on MSM and HIV transmission as well as co-wrote several HIV behavioral surveillance technical reports. Ms. Gamble is also a Certified Health Education Specialist and an active member in the American Public Health Association and National Association of Social Workers.
