ABOUT THIS SESSION
This workshop will provide an introduction to the principles of integrated treatment for persons with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. After background on the prevalence of co-occurring disorders and clinical implications, integrated treatment will be defined and the principles guiding treatment will be reviewed. A new program combining two evidence-based practices (Integrated Treatment for Dual Disorders (IDDT) + Illness Management and Recovery (IMR) = Enhanced IMR) will be described, including the curriculum developed specifically for the program.
Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
- Identify at least five principles of integrated treatment for co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders
- List at least six modules from the Enhanced Illness Management and Recovery (E-IMR) program for co-occurring disorders
- Describe at least three methods for integrating a focus on substance use and mental health issues in the context of providing the E-IMR program
SESSION PRESENTER
Kim T. Mueser, PhD is a clinical psychologist at the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Boston University, and Professor of Occupational Therapy, Psychological and Brain Sciences, and Psychiatry. His research interests are on the development and evaluation of psychosocial interventions for persons with serious mental illness. His work has involved a range of different treatments, including integrated treatment for co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder, illness management and recovery, cognitive remediation, family psychoeducation, interpersonal skills training, and treatment of first episode psychosis. He has published several hundred peer reviewed publications and co-authored over ten books. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
