ABOUT THIS SESSION
This interactive workshop will engage and challenge providers to quickly learn and practice effective use of motivational and behavioral tools and techniques. The combination of these two evidence-based approaches consistently demonstrate the best outcomes for treating a variety of mental health and substance use disorders. Participants will use and walk away with clinical skills, cheat sheets, and handouts to build rapport, increase client readiness, and promote change for youth/young adults (12-25 years old) and adults (26+).
Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
- Begin to use motivational and behavioral intervention tools
- Adopt session handouts to deliver structured session techniques
- Practice clinical skills leading to improved outcomes for co-occurring disorders
SESSION PRESENTERS
Win Turner, PhD, LADC is a clinical psychologist, evaluator, and instructor in Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Effective Interventions for Youth & Families, and Healthcare Integration. Currently, Dr. Turner's primary work involves helping communities increase the capacity to deliver effective integrated healthcare for substance use, co-occurring disorders, and other social determinants impacting wellness. Dr. Turner is advancing the implementation of integrated care in hospital departments, community medical centers and other entities through program development, evaluation, and training. He is the project director for Center for Behavioral Health Integration (C4BHI) on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funded Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) initiative and a clinical instructor for Stony Brook University. C4BHI is a small collaborative of psychologists and social workers helping to evaluate and train in the behavioral health sciences. Dr. Turner has authored recent publications, which include SAMHSA’s Brief Integrated Treatment Manual for SBIRTand a new Interventionist’s Guide for Working with Risky Marijuana Use. In the past, Dr. Turner has participated on expert panels for the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the National Drug Court Institute (NDCI), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), the New York Times, and Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ).
