Course Description:

The extreme reactions of troubled and traumatized adolescents, ranging from angry arousal to frozen withdrawal, can trigger anyone’s sense of helplessness, failure, dissociation, and rejection. Therapists who work with these young clients must foster their own capacity for self-awareness and self-regulation. This workshop will offer strategies for getting unhooked from old enactments as well as mindful, empathic interventions that help teens feel more secure, connected, present, and regulated.

Learning Objectives - At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe Developmental-Relational Therapy (DRT), an attachment-based model of trauma treatment
  2. List specific adolescent attachment styles that might interact with and trigger the attachment styles of practicing clinicians
  3. Utilize the React, Reflect, and Respond approach for corrective relational experiences
  4. Apply the four M’s—mirroring, mentalizing, mindfulness, and modulation—to increase connection and mood regulation
  5. Utilize the skills of adult presence, validation, self-disclosure, and enactments to bring traumatized teens back into relationships with themselves and with the practicing therapist

Martha B. Straus, PhD, a professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology at Antioch University New England, is the author of numerous articles and five books including No-Talk Therapy for Children and Adolescents, Adolescent Girls in Crisis: Intervention and Hope, and, most recently, Treating Traumatized Adolescents: Development, Attachment, and the Therapeutic Relationship.
