Organ Donation Advanced Seminar for Standardized Clinical Education - November 2017

Purpose: 

This comprehensive and interactive course on the organ donation process in the U.S., is intended to educate physicians, advanced clinicians, nurses, and other members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team about the history and overall system, clinical considerations and administrative processes, as well as their roles and responsibilities. The course will utilize multiple teaching modalities, including lectures, case-scenarios, and video. Please reference the Curriculum for a complete listing of course topics covered. 


Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the historic and present overview of the U.S. organ donation and transplantation system and discuss the legal and ethical considerations.
  • Identify basic characteristics of a potential donor and define  the two potential pathways for cadaveric organ donation.
  • Explain, both administrative and medical aspects involved in the donation process such as determination of brain death,  donation facilitation in special situations, and the physician role, intensivist and palliative care, in end-of-life care in the ICU. 
  • Identify and describe the principles and goals of organ donor management.
  • Discuss the psychosocial and grief resource needs and identify principles of effective communication with a potential donor family.
  • Articulate and describe the factors and practices which contribute to a culture of donation in a hospital system and a successful integration of organ donation into hospital processes, through collaboration between the hospital and organ procurement organization. 
  • Describe the significant benefits of donation and its personal impact on patients and families. 
 

Target Audience: 

Physicians, advanced practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, administrators, social workers, pastoral care, and other healthcare professionals who may be involved with the organ donation process.

 

This is a pilot program offering. While the comprehensive course is being presented and continuing education credits will be provided, the participants will be asked for feedback in order to allow for future improvements to the course.


Course Fees: 

The course registration fee is $185. This fee covers registration, breaks, continental breakfast and lunch. NOTE: there is a separate fee to purchase the printed course materials. After registration, course participants will be provided detailed information on how to purchase their printed course materials
