Purpose/Goal:

Selecting patients to receive a kidney transplant in addition to a liver or heart transplant can be challenging. This selection process depends in part on the potential reversibility of renal dysfunction with the extrarenal transplant alone. Many factors influence renal recovery, but firm evidence-based recommendations remain open for debate. The goal of this webinar is to discuss the factors that influence selection of patients to receive a kidney transplant in addition to extrarenal transplant, and the literature that informs clinical decision-making.

Target Audience:

Members of the donation and transplantation community serving diverse populations to include administrators, coordinators, physicians, nurses, surgeons, managers, quality improvement specialists, social workers, and other donation and transplantation center professionals and their colleagues.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the background of the debate over simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation (SLK)
  • Describe risk factors for renal nonrecovery following liver transplantation alone in candidates with renal dysfunction
  • Describe patient characteristics that may determine eligibility for SLK, and UNOS listing criteria for SLK
  • Outline how the evaluation process for combined heart-kidney transplantation may differ from SLK
