The Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching is pleased to provide an action-packed weekend for our attendees! From speakers to social events, CAST will have it all. The conference will kickoff with Captain Mark Kelly's inspirational keynote specifically for Texas science teachers. We will host the Apollo 13 Warning Systems Engineer, Jerry Woodfill, who heard "Houston, We've Had a Problem" live in mission control. All “CASTronauts” are invited to the Party on the Plaza on Wednesday night before kicking off their jam-packed weekend! CAST KEYNOTE: CAPTAIN MARK KELLY Join us as CAST welcomes one of our key speaker’s Captain Mark Kelly. Kelly was the Commander of the Space Shuttle Endeavour’s Final Mission and Space and Aviation Contributor for NBC News and MSNBC. With an extraordinary career of service to our military, our nation and humanity, Kelly has secured his place in history as a role model and modern-day pioneer. CAST FEATURED SPEAKER: JERRY WOODFILL CAST is thrilled to introduce Jerry Woodfill as a CAST Featured Speaker. Jerry Woodfill has worked as a NASA employee at the Johnson Space Center for more than 52 years. Receiving a Rice degree in electrical engineering, he was so impressed by hearing President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 Rice Stadium Moon Race speech that he joined NASA in 1965 and became the Apollo Moon Program’s Spacecraft Warning System Engineer, the only NASA employee to serve in this role. Monitoring both at the time of the Lunar Landing, Jerry shares the account in programs often presented for the NASA JSC Speakers Bureau. Similarly, at his station the evening of the explosion of Apollo 13, Jerry was among the first to hear the crew’s call for help, “Houston, We'd Had a Problem,” for it was Jerry’s warning system’s alarm which was first to alert Mission Control to the grave situation that might have resulted in the death of the crew. EDUCATIONAL EXCURSIONS Space Center Houston, the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center, is offering CAST attendees a three-hour visit. Participants will hear a brief introduction in the Mission Briefing Center, take a tram tour to Johnson Space Center's Vehicle Mock-up Facility and Rocket Park. Attendees will be able to explore one of Space Center Houston's top attractions, such as Starship Gallery, Independence Plaza, or Mission to Mars. CASTronauts are encouraged to sign up for the Educational Excursions to NASA! Excursions are available Thursday at 8 AM and 1 PM, Friday at 8 AM and 1 PM and Saturday at 8 AM. Registration and payment are required. |

CAST 2017 LAUNCH PARTY Get ready to Blast Off, CAST is excited to invite you to our "CAST 2017 Launch Party" reception on Friday, November 10, 2017. Join us as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Science Teachers Association of Texas! Attendees will enjoy heavy hor d’oeuvres and an exciting evening of dancing and music by the DJ stylings of Signature Eventx, including laser light shows and galaxy disco balls. CASTronauts will have the chance to win amazing prizes during our live game show, before blasting off into a packed weekend of workshops and new opportunities! |
