Course Description:

Clinicians who provide therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum often discover they must learn to be more proactive, data driven, and direct. The work demands that the provider incorporate each individual’s social challenges and the way each client processes the world around them into a treatment plan for effective therapeutic change.  Through lecture and case examples, Dr. Wahlberg will discuss and explore treatment modalities that build trust, involve families, re-define confidentiality, and encourage collaboration with schools and other providers.

Learning objectives
At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

1.         Describe the autism spectrum disorder, its social challenges, and how individuals on the spectrum may process the world differently.
2.         Explain how autism may impact the therapeutic process.
3.         Compare different types of therapy and which modalities might elicit the most therapeutic change in individuals on the spectrum..
4.         Apply at least two appropriate strategies for building trust and rapport.
5.         Describe what effective collaboration with other helping professionals might look like.
6.         Explain the importance of incorporating social skill groups in the private practice setting.
