ABOUT THIS SESSION
Session Description: Building a resilient and recovery-oriented system through achievable, actionable strategies is not only possible, it is feasible and necessary. This session includes an overview of the vital elements of a transformed behavioral healthcare system – from philosophy to outcomes – that prioritizes consumer resilience and recovery.
Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
1. Define and describe recovery-oriented systems
2. Differentiate between minimal consumer/youth engagement and authentic; meaningful participation within systems
3. Apply strategies to support the enhancement of the District’s recovery-oriented systems
SESSION PRESENTERS
Johanna Bergan is a well-established advocate for youth with lived experience and the Executive Director at Youth MOVE National. Through her work with Youth MOVE, she has become an experienced speaker and presenter on the importance of youth voice, youth and young adult engagement in systems change, youth peer-to-peer development, transition from child to adult mental health systems, and lived experience in policy and systems change.
Tom Hill began at the National Council for Behavioral Health in March 2017, serving as Vice President of Addiction and Recovery. Tom previously served as a Presidential Appointee in the position of Senior Advisor on Addiction and Recovery to the SAMHSA Administrator. As part of this post, Mr. Hill initially served as Acting Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. Prior to his appointment, he was a Senior Associate at Altarum Institute, serving as Technical Assistance Director for a number of SAMHSA treatment and recovery support grant initiatives. He also served for four years as Director of Programs at Faces & Voices of Recovery.
Mr. Hill is frequently sought out as a national thought leader in the addiction and recovery field; his personal experience of recovery from addiction spans over two decades. Reflecting his commitment to the goal of long-term recovery for individuals, families, and communities, Mr. Hill has also served on numerous Boards of Directors, advisory boards, committees, and task force/working groups. Mr. Hill received his MSW in community organizing from Hunter College at City University of New York. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Johnson Institute America Honors Recovery Award, the NALGAP Advocacy Award, and a Robert Wood Johnson Fellowship in the Developing Leadership in Reducing Substance Abuse initiative.
