Brain Death Declaration: Moving Toward Better Quality and Uniformity

David M. Greer, MD, MA, FCCM, FAHA, FNCS, FAAN, FANA
Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Vice Chair of Neurology
Yale University School of Medicine

Dr. Greer received his MD and MA (English Literature) from the University of Florida, and then trained at the Massachusetts General Hospital in neurology, with specialized fellowship training in stroke and neurocritical care. His special interests include coma and disorders of consciousness, brain death, stroke, and neurocritical care.

Dr. Greer's interests neurocritical care studies in the past have included coma, brain death, hypothermia and extubation, as well as an interest in features that may predict outcome from coma and cardiac arrest, including neuroimaging, electrophysiology, biomarkers and the clinical examination. He has studied the variability in brain death determination, with a goal of providing standardization in this field. He also studied the use of hypothermia in cardiac arrest and stroke, showing the safety of combined hypothermia and cardiac catheterization

J. Javier Provencio, MD, FCCM, FAAN, FNCS
Louise Nerancy Associate Professor in Neurology, Director, Nerancy Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, Associate Professor, Center for Brain Immunology and Glia,
University of Virginia

Dr. Provencio received his medical degree at Penn State University College of Medicine followed by training in Neurology, Internal Medicine, Medical Critical Care and Neurocritical Care at the University of Virginia. He recently returned to the University of Virginia as the Director of Nerancy Neuroscience ICU and a researcher in acute brain injuries in the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG Center). His special interests include the inflammatory consequences of acute brain injuries, cognitive dysfunction after acute brain injuries, and education of medical personnel in the appropriate diagnosis of Death by Neurological Criteria (Brain Death).

Fernando D. Goldenberg, MD
Associate Professor of Neurology and Surgery (Neurosurgery), Co-Director, Neuroscience ICU
University of Chicago

Dr. Goldenberg earned his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires, MD, Argentina. He serves as the co-director, Neuroscience ICU at the University of Chicago.  Some of his research interest lies in tracking cerebral salt wasting, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and brainstem ischemia.
