Purpose/Goal:

The recovery of hearts for transplantation from a donor after circulatory determination of death (DCDD) is currently not practiced in the U.S. There are clinical and ethical concerns which have prevented these types of cases from being pursued. As patients continue to die on the national waitlist, the donation and transplantation community must identify innovative ways or challenge past and current practices to evaluate if there are new perspectives and information which can push the boundaries. During this webinar, we will be learning from our colleagues in the U.K. and will hear how they challenged their limitations, pushed the boundaries, the obstacles they overcame, their experiences, and their successes.

Target Audience:

Members of the donation and transplantation community serving diverse populations to include administrators, coordinators, physicians, nurses, surgeons, managers, quality improvement specialists, social workers, and other donation and transplantation center professionals and their colleagues.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the webinar the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the various ethical, regulatory and clinical considerations when pursuing DCDD hearts.
  • Identify the donation process practiced in the U.K. for coordinating and recovering DCDD hearts.
  • Describe the outcomes of the DCDD heart transplants.
  • Summarize key learnings from the U.K. experience in recovering and transplanting DCDD hearts.
