Purpose/Goal:

Many of us struggle when having conversations with children about the death of a loved one and explaining the concept of donation. As we know, the concept of death is complex, and depending on the age and developmental stage of the child (or children), it can be hard to know what the best approach may be in offering support. Families play a vital role in the communication with children, and it is beneficial to have a clear understanding of the family dynamics prior to embarking on these discussions. Spending time to assess the family’s needs, the child’s developmental stage, and what resources may be available within the family’s community, are three crucial tools to aid in the conversation process with children.

Target Audience:

Members of the donation and transplantation community serving diverse populations to include administrators, coordinators, physicians, nurses, surgeons, managers, quality improvement specialists, social workers, and other donation and transplantation center professionals and their colleagues.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the webinar the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the developmental stages and ages of the children involved in the situation
  • Evaluate family dynamics relative to the situation and with respect to the children
  • Describe the concept of dying and/or death and donation to children of varying ages as appropriate
  • Identify and provide appropriate family specific supportive resources.
