Surgical Director, Abdominal Organ Transplantation
Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Institute, LA

Purpose/Goal:

The increasing number of patients requiring kidney transplantation is continually challenging the transplant community to identify opportunities to increase the number of living donors. The implementation of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy was a major step forward in increasing living donor benefits in terms of reduced pain, bleeding, length of stay, and improved aesthetic outcomes. In a constant effort to optimize nephrectomy procedures to minimize disruptions to a living donor’s life, a new procedure with the aid of robotics has been developed. This webinar will explore the use of robotic surgery in living donation.

Target Audience:

Members of the donation and transplantation community serving diverse populations to include administrators, physicians, surgeons, nurses, managers, quality improvement specialists, multi-disciplinary abdominal organ transplant specialists, coordinators, and other donation and transplantation professionals.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:
  • Describe advancements made in robotic donor nephrectomy surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System.
  • Explain the various advantages associated with the use of the da Vinci Surgical System vs. Hand Assist Laparoscopic technique regarding patient length of stay and post-surgical outcomes.
  • Identify considerations for care of the patient undergoing robotic donor nephrectomy.
