Purpose/Goal:

The scarcity of organs available for transplant requires the donation and transplantation community to challenge our own comfort level in pursuing the use of organs which are classified as PHS increased risk organs and organs from other increased risk donors not specifically covered by PHS guidelines. This webinar will specifically focus on pursing and utilizing organs from donors with active cancer or a history of cancer and from donors with a history of IV drug use.

Target Audience:

Members of the donation community serving diverse populations to include administrators, coordinators, physicians, nurses, surgeons, managers, quality improvement specialists, social workers, and other donation professionals and their colleagues.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to

  • Describe different types of histories of cancer and their impact on usability of organs for transplantation.
  • Identify how increased IV drug use leads to increased Hepatitis C and the potential impact on organ utilization.
  • Describe how one DSA has successfully increased the use of PHS high risk organs, with a specific focus on donors with a history of IV drug use.
