Purpose/Goal:

The legal designation to be a donor can pose conflicting ideas and confusion of the appropriate donation process to the healthcare team in the hospital. During this webinar, we will be presenting a challenging First Person Authorization scenario which resulted in multiple concerns and a breakdown in the donation process. Internal questions about First Person Authorization ultimately led one hospital to seek a professional legal opinion. We will discuss the legal analysis and the lessons learned in both scenarios.

Target Audience:

Members of the donation and transplantation community serving diverse populations to include administrators, coordinators, physicians, nurses, surgeons, managers, quality improvement specialists, social workers, pastoral care and other donation and transplantation center professionals and their colleagues.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify potential hospital concerns and perceptions of First Person Authorization.
  2. Describe the legal analysis of the hospital concerns.
  3. Describe the ramifications of not being to sufficiently address the hospital concerns.
  4. Identify actions that could be taken to provide the hospital team with a roadmap to navigate the First Person Authorization cases.
  5. Establish escalation protocols in hospitals to ensure staff feel legally protected.
