All intimate relationships are challenging, but when one partner suffers from severe anxiety, the challenges are intensified.  Over time, anxiety can strain even the most loving relationship, damaging trust and intimacy. Both partners begin to feel that the other “is just not on my wave length anymore.” And this may be true, because when one partner views the world with anxious eyes and the other does not, each has a fundamentally different experience of life. And these different experiences can create an ever-widening chasm. Yet, as this workshop will emphasize, therapists can teach couples to bridge the gap by helping them to work in concert to re-establish and deepen the connection between them.

Toward that end, of reducing anxiety and achieving attuned connection, the workshop introduces the   STOP Solution for calming emotional flooding.  The STOP Solution provides a methodical protocol of easy-to-use tools that can be applied when clients experience anxiety or other difficult-to-manage emotions.  The tools based on hypnosis, mindfulness and cognitive behavioral approaches have specific and individualized applicability to the most commonly experienced triggers.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain at least two of the three cognitive, affective and behavior components of anxiety.
  2. List at least 2 of the anxiety-based barriers to attunement
  3. Utilize the knowledge gained about both the components of anxiety and the barriers to attunement to provide psycho-education to clients
  4. Describe two interventions that foster role flexibility for couples.
  5. Describe two interventions that can help clients foster resiliency in the face of anxiety-based over dependent bonds.
