Essential Competencies of Preceptors: A Focus on Working with APRN Students

Module 6: Communication and Conflict Resolution

Introduction

Transparent, clear, and timely communication between the preceptor and student is foundational to the teaching and learning process. Providing feedback to students on their performance and engaging in dialogue that helps develop their clinical reasoning and improve their future practice is one of the important hallmarks of communication. Clinical learning environments, however, often pose unique challenges to effective communication, complicating the process with pressures such as limited time, competing demands, and varied distractions. This module will examine key elements of effective feedback conversations, identify what can interfere with effective feedback conversations, and discuss ways in which preceptors can facilitate high quality conversations with students that can result in deeper learning and improved performance.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe key elements of reflective feedback conversations using the good judgment approach;
  2. Identify barriers to facilitating reflective feedback conversations with students;
  3. Examine strategies for establishing a psychologically safe feedback environment;
  4. Discuss techniques for identifying and exploring the source of performance gaps;
  5. Deliver concrete, objective and actionable feedback on performance; and
  6. Apply effective communication skills in the context of conflict resolution and difficult conversations.
