Teacher-centered

Formal Authority

Teacher responsible for providing and controlling flow of content. The student is expected to receive the content.

Demonstrator Model

Teacher acts as a role model by demonstrating skills and then acting as a coach to students trying to learn and apply the skills

Student-Centered

Facilitator

Teacher places emphasis on the student to take initiative for learning and designs activities where the student learns and uses content through problem-solving.

Delegator

Teacher places control and responsibility with learner, allowing student to design learning activities while the teacher fills a consultant role.

Adapted from University of South Carolina's Center for Teaching Excellence

It is important to note that one teaching style is not superior to another. Teaching styles vary based on student learning styles and needs, content, context, and setting. Preceptors should tailor their teaching style to best fit the student and situation.
