Module 3: Clinical Teaching Strategies

Introduction

Teaching in the clinical setting presents unique challenges and requires a repertoire of clinical teaching strategies. With increasing patient acuity and complexity, the preceptor has to balance providing relevant learning experiences with providing safe, quality patient care. This module will explore strategies for aligning clinical learning experiences with individual and course objectives, examine strategies of effective teaching in complex care environments, and discuss how to address deficiencies in learner performance.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe approaches to coordinate student's learning experiences with course and individual objectives;
  2. Discuss effective teaching strategies used by preceptors in the clinical setting;
  3. Identify own teaching style in clinical setting; and
  4. Develop effective performance improvement plans to ensure student success when deficiencies/weaknesses are identified.
