The Essential Competencies of Preceptors: A Focus on Working with APRN Students

Overview

Graduate nursing programs partner with a variety of clinical practice settings to provide advanced practice students with expert clinical training. Within these practice sites, clinicians offer students rich clinical learning experiences. These individuals are identified as preceptors. While many clinical practice sites have programs that prepare APRNs to precept new employees, most programs do not include specific preparation for working with graduate students.

This Preceptor Development Program includes seven online modules followed by an in-person simulation session designed to prepare clinicians to work effectively and efficiently with students in the clinical setting. Health care providers who participate in programs that prepare them to work with students report more confidence and comfort in the preceptor role. This translates into enhanced learning experiences for students and satisfying teaching for preceptors.

Each module contains detailed objectives. However the following gives you an overview of the topic areas you will cover over the course of all seven modules:

1. Preceptor roles and responsibilities
2. Assessing learner needs and learning styles
3. Clinical teaching and evaluation strategies
4. Facilitating critical thinking and clinical decision-making
5. Managing learning experiences with culturally and generationally diverse students
6. Communication and conflict resolution
7. Legal and regulatory considerations for the preceptor
8. Simulation session

Program Basics

• Begin the course by viewing the Introductory Video.
• Each module contains interactive content to help review the material.
• After completing Module 1 proceed in order through the remaining six modules until you complete all seven.
• Once completed, proceed to the "summary" tab. You will complete an evaluation survey that needs to be submitted prior to attending the simulation session.
• Participants may not be able to re-access module content once completed. Please remember to print out resources provided throughout the program to add to personal resource files.

Continuing Education (CE) for Nurses:

The University of Maryland School of Nursing is an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. APRNs may receive 11 continuing education contact hours after successfully completing this learning activity. Successful completion requires the participant to complete all seven modules, the evaluation survey and the simulation session. Your certificate will be emailed to you after attending and completing one of the simulation sessions.

Accreditation Statement

The University of Maryland School of Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Criteria for Awarding Contact Hours

Participants may receive 11 contact hours upon successful completion of this educational activity. Successful completion of this Continuing Education (CE) education activity for nurses is demonstrated by completing all online learning modules, attending the simulation session, completion of the online evaluation survey, and completion of the verification of attendance form. Partial credit is not provided. Participants receive a CE certificate via email from the University of Maryland School of Nursing approximately 2-4 weeks after submitting their request and required documentation.
