Updating to DSM-5: What You Need to Know

The focus of this workshop is to help mental health clinicians understand the major changes from DSM-IV to DSM-5, including the creation of new diagnoses and categories, the consolidation of some diagnoses, and the elimination of others. In addition, the demise of multiaxial diagnosis, diagnosis-specific changes (e.g., criteria revisions), as well as broader, manual-wide changes (e.g., use of dimensional assessments) will be reviewed.
 
Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:


1)         Describe the new nonaxial documentation of mental disorders.       
2)         Explain changes in the organization of the DSM-5.
3)         List the new disorders included in the DSM-5.
4)         Apply the use of new criteria for disorders in DSM-5.
5)         Summarize the controversy associated with the changes in DSM-5.

Jeff Ashby, PhD, is Professor and Training Director of Georgia State University’s APA-accredited Counseling Psychology PhD program.  He is a licensed psychologist and a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology in Counseling Psychology. He teaches ethics and diagnosis and is the author or coauthor of more than 80 refereed journal articles, numerous book chapters, and two books.
