Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy : Treatment For Children with Trauma

What Brattleboro Retreat attendees said about Dr. Hughes in 2012:

“Dr. Hughes moved so comfortably between theory and examples, it made for learning and entertainment simultaneously.”

“Very informative and applicable. Lecture was presented in a way that kept me engaged—great job.”

“Extremely important content presented in a casual format that incorporated vignettes (verbal and video) that reinforced the content. Dr. Hughes’ method of presenting the material was delightful. It had the feeling of ‘stream of consciousness’ with hints of humor. ”

Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) is an experiential and reflective treatment which establishes attuned states between the young person, the therapist and caregiver to safely explore past traumas and current behaviors involving both fear and shame.  Participants in this seminar will learn to assist neglected and abused children to develop coherent stories and dialogues with playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy.  Dr. Hughes will demonstrate DDP with videos of treatment sessions.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the impact of secure developmental attachment on neurological, affective, cognitive, and behavioral development.
2. Explain how abuse and neglect create insecure and disorganized attachment patterns which impede normal development.
3. List the principles of  psychotherapy and parenting which facilitate the development of a secure attachment.
4. Apply at least 2 specific strategies of  parenting and psychotherapy which will facilitate the development of a secure attachment.

5. Explain  the concepts of 'blocked trust' and 'blocked care' and their implications for treatment.
