Anxiety and depression are two of the most common complaints in therapy, and clients often suffer from both simultaneously. Spotting the co-occurrence can be challenging for therapists, and different clients require different approaches. In this conference, Dr. Wehrenberg will present seven different client profiles that will provide therapists with a nuanced roadmap with which to make appropriate interventions. She will discuss features of temperament and learning styles that predict what set of symptoms a client is most ready to tackle, and she will offer a variety of practical strategies to help clients recover.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

1. Identify at least 4 types of co-occurring anxiety and depression.

2. Apply at least two interventions fir avoiding pitfalls in the therapeutic relationship common to comorbid anxiety and depression and engage productively with clients.

3. Outline strategies to stop rumination and shift external locus of control.

4. Explain the impact of temperament on symptom presentation and therapy process.

5. Name at least two cognitive treatment skills to stop worry and prevent catastrophic thinking.

6. Utilize the balance wheel to identify and select appropriate lifestyle changes.
