SOPHIE: Generating a Personal Class Assistant for Online Learners
If you find yourself repeating instructions that obviously no one read, copying the same email response to student after student, wondering if anyone checks due dates, SOPHIE, a class assistant for keeping learners on track, might be right for you.
Identify observed, recurrent learner needs that might benefit from a holistic support platform.
Explore how the presenter's SOPHIE construct can be adapted to individual pedagogy.
Devise your own versions of SOPHIE to address specific instructional goals in your own classes.

I have taught online since 2014 (six different upper division online courses, two hybrid FYW courses, and an online graduate class). In Spring 2019, I received my institution’s Excellence in Online Teaching Award. In Spring 2019, one of my online courses was certified by Quality Matters. My publications and professional presentations address issues in translingualism, online learning, teacher preparation, and the online learning needs of non-traditional students.
