In this session, we will discuss how the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Division of eLearning and Professional Studies developed processes for ensuring quality online course development and implemented Quality Matters across the institution from training through individual certification and course recognition.
Identify challenges associated with ensuring quality online courses.
Discuss how to support educators in developing quality online/hybrid courses.
Outline strategies for an institutional QM plan.

Randi Kirkland, Senior Instructional Design Specialist, University of Alabama at Birmingham
Randi Kirkland is a Senior Instructional Design Specialist at UAB and works with faculty to develop online and web-enhanced courses. She is a Quality Matters Master Reviewer and APPQMR face to face facilitator. She assists with the implementation of the QM initiative at UAB as a QM Coordinator. She also has experience teaching online courses at UA.
Dr. Stacey Cofield, Associate Professor, The University of Alabama at Birmingham
Dr. Cofield has been with UAB since 2003, is a Quality Matters Master Reviewer, member of the UAB Quality Matters Implementation Plan Committee, and recent past Chair of the School of Public Health (SOPH) Online Education Committee. The 2018 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recipient for the SOPH, Dr. Cofield has been teaching for more than 15 years in the face-to-face, blended, and online environment and was recently awarded a UAB Quality Enhancement Plan grant to implement her idea to “Create Digital Teams in an Online Environment.”
Samira Laouzai, Deputy Director/Manager of eLearning and Quality Assurance, The University of Alabama at Birmingham
Samira Laouzai manages the instructional design and media services workflow, faculty training, continuing education offerings, and Quality Matters initiative. She oversees the student online orientation for freshmen, transfer, and dual enrollments. She teaches a First Year Experience online course at UAB. Samira serves as a QM Coordinator, Master Reviewer, and APPQMR facilitator face to face and online. She is also a certified Lean Sigma Green Belt.
