Description
Let's discuss the importance of using the QM Rubric Standards when developing hands-on online science lab courses. We will explore QM certified lab courses in biology and anatomy and physiology. This session will include the experience of actively taking part in hands-on lab investigations developed for online science courses.

Alanna Tynes, Professor of Biology, Lone Star College-Tomball
Alanna M. Tynes is a professor of Biology at Lone Star College-Tomball. She holds a master’s degree in Zoology with a minor in Science Education from Texas A&M University (1992) and is a Texas registered Emergency Medical Technician. For the past 25 years she has been teaching Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Majors Biology, Non-Majors Biology, Honors Biology and Nutrition. She developed her first online course in Nutrition in 2001. To date she has created five fully online science courses. Alanna was awarded the Lone Star College Faculty Excellence Award in 2005 and in again in 2012. Her most recent presentations have been on topics of online learning and the use of lab kits. Alanna partnered with Carolina Biological to present at the League for Innovation in the Community College Innovations 2018 Conference in National Harbor, Maryland. She serves as a Faculty Mentor to faculty teaching online using the LMS’s WebCT, Vista, ANGEL, and D2L. In addition, she is a HAM radio operator (KG5PFH), a member of the Tomball Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and an American Heart Institute BLS CPR Instructor for Health Care Providers.
 
 

Shannon McGurk, Director, Distance Learning, Carolina Biological Supply
 
Shannon joined Carolina Biological Supply Company in 2015 with more than 15 years of higher education experience. Previously, she served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs for a group of 20 schools spread across the country. She has been active in the online learning community for more than 10 years. Her experience also includes curriculum development, instructional design, and compliance and accreditation.
