Death by Drug Intoxication
The presentation will discuss the commonly abused illicit and prescription drugs and how they result in the death of an individual. This will include but will not be limited to heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, ethanol, and oxycodone. Case examples will be used and additional information such as epidemiology, basic physiology, and regional variation in drug use will be presented. An explanation on how a forensic pathologist makes the determination of cause and manner of death will be provided. The current opioid crisis will be addressed as will some fundamental issues such as coroner vs. medical examiner jurisdiction and how a death certificate is filled out.
