2019 ARHE/ARS/AAPG Conference Schedule
Ben Knapp, MSW, University of Southern Maine, Recovery Oriented Campus Center, Graduate Assistant
Ben is an alumni of the Recovery Oriented Campus Center (ROCC) and a recent graduate of the University of Southern Maine's Master of Social Work program. He has been in long term recovery since September 25th, 2014. Recovery has allowed him to transform his life from a self described "prison of fear" into a rewarding journey where anything is possible. After reaching freedom from substance use in his own life, Ben has sought to help other struggling with addiction. He has interned at the local youth homeless shelter, the state of Maine's juvenile detention center, and is currently pursuing dual licensing as a Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Clinical Social Worker in addition to being a Certified Peer Recovery Coach. Ben found the Recovery Oriented Campus Center as a concentration year graduate student, and has assisted peer support groups as a graduate assistant for the past year. His role at the ROCC allowed him to help and support others in their recovery journey. The ROCC has provided a positive leadership experience and enrichment of his own recovery. The past four and a half years of recovery has been full of challenges, yet the fear that once permeated life has slowly been extinguished by love and happiness. Ben was born in Farmington, Maine and now lives in Saco, Maine with his amazing wife Francesca, without whom none of this would have been possible.
