2019 ARHE/ARS/AAPG Conference Schedule
Wayne Johnson, AS, PRSS, Communities for Recovery/Park University, GYST Facilitator/Peer Recovery Coach
I am the Get Your Self Together (GYST) facilitator at Communities for Recovery, a Joint Commission and CAPRSS accredited Recovery Community Organization (RCO) in Austin, Texas. I created the GYST self-development system through trial and error while I was cycling in and out of active substance misuse. During this phase of development, I was in numerous situations where I used GYST to build recovery capital. When I would have a period of sobriety and would use GYST, my life satisfaction and productivity would skyrocket. So, once I cemented a firm foundation of recovery; I presented the idea of developing GYST further to the RCO I work for and they have been supporting me to do the workshop ever since. GYST was built around a basic project management platform and uses goal prioritizing, life skills building, and self-care to empower a peer through the process of creating a more manageable and wellness-focused lifestyle. A mentor is there through the process to do check ins, which are based entirely on their level of need. As a person moves through the stages of change and the continuum of care, their brains are building neural pathways associated with the new behaviors they are practicing; the old neural pathways will shrink as the positive lifestyle changes occur. A system like GYST is an excellent vehicle to rehabilitating the whole person; mind, body, and spirit.
