"We can't say that - it's C-4." "Our [conservative or liberal] donors will blow up if we say this." "These campaigns just aren't relevant to us." We've all heard these reactions to messages that touch upon hot-button issues in the political Zeitgeist. And it's worth being careful, as laws governing nonprofit C-3 and C-4 status can open your organization to legal jeopardy. But donors don't live in a vacuum. They know there's a campaign going on, and they notice when letters, emails, social media posts, planned giving campaign statements and other fundraising materials don't acknowledge or address what's happening in their world. How do you thread the needles to connect your cause with the biggest event of the moment without running afoul of laws and donor sensibilities? There are ways to plug in and make hay.
