Stephanie Norby is the Director of the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access (SCLDA), an office that works with all of the Smithsonian’s museums and research centers. The Center produces the Smithsonian Learning Lab (learninglab.si.edu), its next-generation tool to make access to and the use of Smithsonian digital assets for learning easier and more effective. The Center’s ongoing research on teachers’ use of the Lab demonstrates the educational value of digital museum assets, finding that it lies in fostering deeper learning. Consequently, the Center’s training for teachers focuses on using digital resources for deeper learning that enables critical thinking, flexible problem-solving, transfer of skills, and use of knowledge in new situations. Before coming to the Smithsonian in 1998, Stephanie was the Director of Curriculum, Professional Development and Assessment in the Kansas City, Missouri School District.
