Dr. Chris Smallen began his career as a Biology and Physical Science teacher at Lenoir City High School in Lenoir City, Tennessee in 1998. Since that time he has served as an instructional technology coach and assistant principal. Currently, as the Chief Technology Officer, he has the opportunity to work with all educators in Lenoir City to imagine the possibilities that can impact teaching and learning, create those opportunities, and share the celebrations and challenges to provide every student the opportunity to excel. During his tenure as Chief Technology Officer the district has implemented a one-to-one digital conversion in grades 1-12 as well as the iLearn Institute at Lenoir City Schools, a virtual instruction program allowing students to take courses completely online. Dr. Smallen has served as an adjunct professor at Tennessee Technological University and King University. He has also served the Tennessee Department of Education as a member of their Personalized Learning Task Force. He is a Google Certified Trainer and a CoSN Certified Educational Technology Leader. Dr. Smallen is also the past president of the East Tennessee Educational Technology Association and serves on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Educational Technology Association which is an affiliate organization of both ISTE and CoSN.
