Dr. Susan Brown recently retired from teaching math at York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois where she also chaired the Math Department for many years. At the school and district levels she led the transitions that brought graphing calculators and then computers into the math classroom. She was part of author teams for UCSMP Algebra and two other textbooks from the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. UCSMP textbooks helped to define ways for math education to incorporate technology into the classroom. She has been active in mathematics teacher professional organizations at the local, state and national level. In earning her PhD in mathematics education at Illinois State University, she studied students' understanding of trigonometry on the coordinate plane.
