Michael Hawes is the Director of Student Privacy at the U.S. Department of Education. Michael is responsible for administering and enforcing federal privacy laws governing students’ education records, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). He also manages ED’s Privacy Technical Assistance Center (https://studentprivacy.ed.gov), which provides general and targeted technical assistance on student privacy issues relating to statutory and regulatory compliance, and best practices for protecting student privacy beyond compliance with Federal requirements. Prior to becoming the Director of Student Privacy, Michael served as the Department’s Statistical Privacy Advisor, advising ED’s Chief Privacy Officer and senior leadership on issues relating to data privacy, data governance, and statistical disclosure limitation. Before joining the Department of Education, he served as a statistician and policy analyst for the U.S. Census Bureau, focusing on data stewardship and data management. Michael is a statistician, a Project Management Institute-certified Project Management Professional (PMP), and an International Association of Privacy Professionals Certified Information Privacy Professional/Government (CIPP/G).
