Destigmatizing Veterans on campus: Creating a more inclusive and empowering campus -- We're not just PTSD!
Track: Higher Education Track (Sponsored by The College Board)
This presentation will focus on creating a veteran friendly college counseling center and campus. Participants will be given specific, innovative and effective actions on how to address stigma on campus and alter the focus to a more empowering and inclusive environment as well as overcoming unique challenges for making your campus more inclusive by recreating the narrative of student veterans. Objectives include: identifying best practices for destigmatizing PTSD and student veterans, overcoming barriers, collaborating with college counseling centers and student engagement, discussing outreach initiative and program development, discussing current challenges/stressors for student veterans and unique ideas on how to address them. Specifics include diversity within student veteran population, invisible Identity, consultation/ collaboration/competency within campus and the community, PTSD/TBI, military sexual trauma (MST), suicide intervention, prevention and education, and ethical considerations. This presentation will be helpful to service providers, faculty and students looking to advocate for a more inclusive counseling center.
