Session Description: This workshop will engage participants in activities that promote the use critical reflection to address inequities that might exist in their own environments. Activities will help practitioners understand implicit bias and its role in teaching and learning. Activities include strategies for identifying personal biases, using anti-deficit models, identifying hot buttons and cultural disconnects that may lead to disproportionate discipline practices.

The objectives for the workshop include:
(a) developing awareness of one's own 'hot buttons' as related to children's behaviors and understanding the importance of providing opportunities for children and adults to comprehend their own, as well as others' emotions
(b) fostering an understanding of implicit bias and its impact on teaching, learning, and interacting, and using culturally responsive practices to develop supportive environments and implement strategies for developing social emotional competencies.
