Making Math Invitational
August 8th, 2018, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM: AM2 Concurrent Session
Track: Practitioners
Category: Rigorous Developmentally Appropriate Practices: Early Numeracy & Mathematics
Session Description: As Doug Clements puts it, "We want kids running around the classroom and bumping into mathematics at every turn." This session will explore how to invite students to tinker with math ideas as they move through inside and outside classroom spaces. Students benefit most when teachers notice, engage, and create situations to prompt mathematical curiosity.
Learning Objectives. Please share 3 key objectives:

1) Identify strategies for integrating math opportunities throughout the preschool classroom and outdoor environment. Participants will consider shifts for their own current classroom environment.

2) Identify math concepts that surface as students engage in math play and everyday play. Participants will analyze situations to uncover the underlying math.

3) Learn generalizational approaches (can applied across interest areas and diverse play situations) to engage and interact with students in order to model and inspire math curiosity and further math concept development.
