Mariel Hufnagel MPA, Ammon Foundation, Executive Director
Mariel battled with alcohol and drug addiction, bipolar disorder and bulimia nervosa for most of her teenage years - resulting in homelessness, incarceration and sex-trafficking - bankrupting her emotionally, financially, physically and spiritually. In 2007 Mariel entered and has sustained abstinence-based recovery. Mariel graduated Kean University summa cum laude with her Bachelors in Public Administration (BPA) and her Masters in Public Administration (MPA) and attributes much of her personal and professional success to returning to school. Currently the Executive Director of Ammon Foundation; Mariel has previously worked as an Advocacy Organizer at the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence - New Jersey (NCADD-NJ) and as the National Chapter Department Manager at Young People in Recovery (YPR). She has been recognized locally and nationally with numerous awards; is regularly featured in media outlets; and is well-known as a dynamic and passionate advocate, servant leader, trainer, consultant and motivational speaker. Mariel believes in health equity, person-centered systems of care and the importance of addiction recovery support; and is driven by her deep desire for all people to be able to access and maintain recovery regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexual orientation or criminal record. Mariel is also a certified yoga teacher and a marathon runner; and during her spare time can be found traveling, drinking black coffee, or laughing and snuggling with her amazing husband Anthony.
