Race is a Body Image Issue: Expanding the Sexological Understanding of Body Image Issues
Description: This workshop will decenter whiteness in understanding body image issues. In imagining a world without borders or prisons, we will discuss concrete ways to reorient sexual freedom around marginalized populations of color, how to uncover unintentional bias about "good healthy" bodies in our language and behavior, and remind ourselves to constantly hold systems of power (like science and law) accountable. This workshop will intentionally focus on colonized sexological hxstories and worldviews, discussing issues of racialized medical oppression and scientism.
Objective(s): At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to: identify 3 ways body image is a systemic issue larger than just eating disorders.
