Title: Vice Presidential Panel - Harrowing and Heroic Tales from the Front Lines of Military History: The Teaching Assistant as Teacher
Abstract: Discussion sections are the crucible in which graduate and undergraduate programs in military history are supposed to alloy, strengthening the curriculum as a whole by enhancing undergraduate learning while providing graduate students invaluable teaching experience. Yet despite their importance, "TAs" rarely receive more than the most rudimentary preparation for this crucial role. Their best laid plans are susceptible to disruption by gender disparities in the classroom (and the course material), contentious political issues, civil-military divisions among the students, and simple unfamiliarity with the field. Members of this roundtable have meet each of these challenges and more and will share their strategies for a successful "tour" as TA.
