Identity Intersectionality: Veterans and the LGBTQIA Identity
LGBTQIA student veterans face unique challenges with the intersectionality of their identities as a student, a veteran, and a member of the LGBTQIA community. Many who have served still feel the lasting effects of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' and have fears around being open about their gender identity or sexual orientation even after service. As veterans, it is no longer necessary to "choose" one community over the other due to the lasting fractures in identity sustained while serving in the military. This panel aims to discuss intersectionality, and how SVA chapters can assist their LGBTQIA student veterans feel welcome and more comfortable in both spaces.
