Transitioning Veterans to University Life: Exploring design, tools, and sustainability of programs that engage veterans
Track: Higher Education
Transitioning from the regimented culture, traditions, and teamwork of military life to the less structured culture of American higher education can present student veterans with challenges that impede success in the collegiate learning experience. This presentation shares the adaptive and innovative campus programs and lessons learned in helping student veterans successfully transition into university life. Participants will gain knowledge and understanding of the innovative approaches and tools used at Syracuse University to engage student veterans in campus life. A successful engagement of student veterans on campus helps raise awareness of student veterans, enables them to access proper resources, provides them a space for belonging, increases students' GPA, empowers student veterans to become leaders within student organizations across campus, and ultimately increases the retention rate of student veterans. This session will share learning moments while integrating and engaging student veterans into campus life.
