District Crisis Communication and Social Media Impact
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM:
Room: Michigan A
Format: Concurrent Session - 60 Minutes
Primary Essential Skill: Strategic Planning
Secondary Essential Skill: Communication Systems Management
Audience: School System Administrators
Brief Session Description: Attendees will dive into a facet of district-level crisis communication that is often overlooked: social media. During this session, facilitator Charlene Blohm, President of C. Blohm & Associates, Inc., social media expert RaShonda Riddle, Director of Marketing and Communications for CoSN, and Pete Just, CTO of the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township, Ind., will unpack planning and development steps, strategies and tactics for CTOs to implement in their districts. With the global audience and 24-hour "news cycle" of social media, a breaking situation can quickly escalate out of control simply for lack of a social media response plan. Monitoring social channels after-hours or during summer break, and responding to posts and comments in a timely, thoughtful fashion will help to temper concerns before they "go viral." CTOs will identify next steps and access to a sample plan of action as well as a social media response decision tree.
